And the fact that big trucks use more fuel, and hence are paying more road
tax to begin with is totally lost on the legislators. yeah that sounds about
right...

if more than a few percent of the road tax collected on fuel was used to
actually maintain roads rather than maintain the Great Lard Spigot (tm),
there would be glass smooth pavement ten inches thick from coast to coast.
Instead, we have tax grab, after tax grab, wherever justification may be
found... regardless of silly things like facts or reason.

Don't forget that there is about $.35 more road taxes per gallon on Diesel
than gasoline to pay for the higher road wear per gallon burned in big
trucks.

You used to be able to get a federal income tax credit to offset the
additional road tax on new diesel cars and light trucks.  Since I haven't
bought a NEW diesel since the early '80s, I don't know if the credit is
still available.
