Re: Volvo D24 diesel timingI did disconnect the cold start device each and everything time I set the timing.
I have set the timing exactly by the instructions, reconnected the cold start device and re-checked it by turning the engine over 2 complete turns back to top dead center and it would read it was correct. It would not start. I re-timed it many times. I think it was James Hanson said to get the air out of the pump, when I did that it started.
I ran but with a lot of white smoke. I re-timed it many times with the same results. I even set the timing to 1.05 with the same results like it did nothing to help. 1.05 was the max the injection pump wheel would turn counter clockwise.
The instructions stated once you set the timing to 0.85 turn the engine 2 complete rotations to top dead center. If you reading was below 0.85 the move the pump toward the engine until you get the correct reading. If it was over the 0.85 you needed to move the pump away from the engine until you get the correct reading. My test readings were on 0.85 or real close.
So what I did was I disconnected the cold start device and moved the pump a little at a time, reconnected it and started it and let it run. I kept moving it up and when I maxed out the movement on the pump did it stop spewing white smoke completely at all RPM ranges.
The car runs great now. The only problem I am having is the black smoke when it gets under an, I guess a medium or heavy load. If you are real light on the accelerator, then there is no black smoke at all. I also installed 6 professionally rebuilt GTD Injectors, which are high performance, this maybe causing too much fuel being delivered. I am going to try and adjust the fuel back a little as stated somewhere in the archives.
If anyone has any more suggestions please state them. I really just learning about these VW engines.
Thanks to all
Tim Hicks
