VW requires the use of 505.01 on the PD engines, and will only approve
up to 10k intervals, though you can run much higher than that with the
newest spec products. Failure to use 505.01 or higher will void your
engine warranty. What is interesting is that 505.01 is not a full
synthetic, but is a blend.
I heard that Amsoil did just recently come out with a 505.01 certified oil.
I (under the guise of tdiparts.com) am a dealer of Elf lubricants, which
have posted some of the highest results in independent tests. I carry
oils suitable for the older diesels, as well as cutting edge products
like 506.01 (CRV) and 504.00/507.00 (Solaris), the latter of which will
be required for most VWs starting next year, obsoleting the 502.00 oils.
