[Vwdiesel] automatic cold start-Paging Roger

That was me.
I use one on my 6.5 gm 4X4 for high idle.

There are really neat high idle devices made by Kussmaul but no electrical
solenoid actuators. That's what is replacing the solenoids the busses used
to use.
If you know of a bus that has a solenoid on right now, it might fall off
from road vibration and poor maintenance ;-)

Your mechanic buddy is FOS however.

Detroit Coil sells a DC coil with a .5" stroke that pulls 10.4 lbs. That
should snap the lever off if required. That's a model 28-655 with a .5"
stroke, 1-1/2" side mount solenoid. Uses 165 watts
Next model down 28-654 makes 2.5lbs on .5" stroke. uses 34 watts with a 50%
duty cycle. I would choose this one, but pull on the lever by hand with a
fish scale first to see just what you need. Overkill isn't that necessary.

this should be what you are looking for. Remember to use a relay to power
it, don't just run all the current through a dash switch, ESPECIALLY an OEM
dash switch, those suck at high current. Best would be one with a two
minute timer, but I dunno if you can get one in 12V.

Yeah, I'd be interested if it was significantly
cheaper than the newer style pumps, which basically
have the feature you are looking for. (Though aren't
cheap to buy.)

Now, I do remember someone mentioning using some sort
of pull-solenoid powered by a switch on the dash. My
plan was to find a VW switch (such as a second
defroster switch) to power the solenoid.

Unfortunately, I never did find a sufficient pull
solenoid. Some of our school busses have one, but the
head mechanic told me that they were NLA. (They are
used to pop open the front door if you accidently shut
it.)

Anyone have a source for some sort of pull-solenoid?
Even having one controlled manually (no cold start
switch) would be better than nothing, which is what I
have now!
