Wow you guys are quick, I pulled the shutoff solenoid out and tested it from the connector and grounded the housing on the motor and the plunger pulled up, I pulled off the timing belt cover to make sure the belt was intact and I was not leaking any fuel from the pulley shaft. I am/was leaking fuel from the throttle shaft when cold and this has been for quite a few months now. Once warm the leak stops. I hooked the fuel line from the filter directly to a container of diesel to make sure it was not a tank issue, although if I have a major air leak would that cause me to loose my prime. Also before I retired for the night I found the rubber plug on the last injector was split and pumped out a lot of diesel. I thought the diesel that was on the engine was from the throttle shaft leak.
The car was running fine no issues and than as I drove up towards my house I suddenly lost power and had the running out of fuel sensation. I drive 130 miles round trip to work, went grocery shopping, visited a relative in a nursing home and stopped to pick the wife up at out daughters house. All that and VERY lucky it broke within eye shot of home.
I thought the VW diesel injection pumps were self priming? I'll check all local connections, use a container of fuel and prime it tonight when I get home. I see it should be no problem to access the banjo bolt to fill it that way but what about the any other air that needs to be purged? Steve' Idea sound good but today I will not have access to any parts (Steve please pass the on the pix) I'm also borrowing a Dodge Pick Up
gas vacuum that uses my daily diesel amount on just start up. I don't know which is the speedometer and which is the fuel gage they both move at the same rate.
Thanks so far guys I'll keep you all posted.......

First make darn sure the shutoff solenoid is pulling open. Swap in the
one from the other pump, put a plug in its place, pull the plunger and use
it as a plug only... If that's fine then make sure you have power to the
solenoid. Before you try cranking it over and running the battery down,
fill the pump with fuel (pull the return banjo bolt and fill from there,
replace
the bolt.) If you can get pressure in the tank, fill the supply and return
lines with fuel as well.
The only two ways I know for the pump to actually quit pumping fuel is
if the vanes wore completey out (not terribly likely) or if the input shaft
seal is leaking so much air that the pump can't lift any fuel.
Other things that come to mind is a brokent timing belt (pump not turning
at all) or a sudden split in a fuel line (sucking air) or a "floater" in the
tank
the fuel plugged the line.
Air filters get pretty cruddy this time of year but that shouldn't make it
suddenly stop. A bit overheated can blow the head gasket and make one
die.
