I read the article you did. It was in the latest or Aug. issue of Popular Mechanics. I also agree with your other comments, that the issues you brought up would likely be brought into the design of a diesel hybrid. Also, I admit I was referring to diesel engine designs that were 25 to 30 or more years old.
The best idea is to build plug in hybrids. There is a non profit organization here in Calif. that is developing them For further details, go to www.calcars.org . The basic idea is to build a hybrid that has a 40 mile battery range before the engine starts up to recharge the batteries. Since a majority of trips are less than 40 miles, you could upon reaching your destination or return home, you could plug it in to recharge your batteries & not have to run your engine burning fossil fuel at all.
