[Vwdiesel] VW Golf TDi w/ Tiptronic?

still trying to help my buddy find a car (remember, his girl can't  
drive stick)
does anyone know if the Golf TDi was ever offered with something  
OTHER than the 4-spd automatic?
apparently the 4-spd sucks, but the 5- or 6-spd automatic  
(Tiptronic?) trannies are excellent

if the Golf TDi was never offered with Tiptronic, any reason you  
couldn't swap one in there?
they were available on gas versions for the same years
