That sounds like the best idea I have heard on this
topic.  I will try and file that one in the memory
banks for the next time I do head work.

I hate to trough more on this topic, but I just found
this from last fall, someone posted on this list.
To the original poster of this thread, sorry, lost
your name.
I snipped this off this list for my future re-build of
my 1.9na motor on 10/6/05.

"Remember that if you ever let 'used' HYD lifters
expand (like take cam out) they need to be
're-compressed' in a vise.  (that was cause of major
'feak-out', when I re-installed head and there was no
compression)"

But, when I re-assembled my head with a known diesel
gooru in Gapland, MD about a 2 months ago, I mentioned
this to him and he said he never did that and he build
diesel motors about 3 a month, with used lifters and
new ones.  He said, they will pump up, no need to do
anything in all his years.

I have not yet installed the motor in my vanagon so I
have yet to find out....
