I would recommend using the Amsoil engine flush before switching over to Amsoil. I believe they recommend idling the engine for a half hour to clean out all the gum & slug BUT do not drive the car with the engine flush in it.
There are two possibilities which might happen to your engine when switching to Amsoil or some other synthetic. It depends on whether the piston rings have lost their temper or have collapsed. The high detergency will clean the carbon under the rings, they will then colapse & you will use much more oil. However, if the rings have not colapsed & thus retain their spring ability, cleaning the carbon out between the rings will allow them to expand thereby decreasing oil consumption. I don't know how ahead of time you can tell which condition your rings are. Amsoil will help keep a healty engine healthy but it will not cure a sick engine. Also, do not put Amsoil in a brand new engine. Brake it in on dino oil for 500 to 1,000 miles so the parts have time to seat in.
