  Jack up the rear wheel, grab it top and bottom and do opposing 
push/pull motion, OR just put your foot on the topside of the tire 
while it's on the ground, and rock it sideways.  If you get clunking 
or movement then the bearing is loose at minimum.  If it's a little 
loose then try tightening it up.  If it's way loose then you'd better 
put in a new bearing.  
  Rear bearing slop is something I try and check with the foot rocking 
method, a few times a year.  I've found they tend to need adjusting once 
or twice a year quite often.  It tends to drive like a low tire and/or bad 
rear shocks.
  Tires going funky can make speed related noises as well as bearings, 
low gear oil, low tires...
