[Vwdiesel] ether and cold starts: WAS Stock head gasket on 1.6TD, 2 hole or 3 hole?

Hmmm... I've been thinking about Alaska winters and starting the
FrankenJetta (1.6TD 1994 body).
A few times each winter it has to sit overnight without being plugged
in. Mornings can be down to -25F where it's parked. (this is
Anchorage, not the bitter cold of Fairbanks)
I was thinking of a webasto or some such heating system. BUT, would
ether start things up at those temps? I've got the glow plugs on a
push-button. So, the 2nd question is will ether blow glow plugs if
they're not on?
Will.
