  Only problem is the direction the engine sits in a Synchro vs a Rabbit. 
The tranny is wrong.  I have an old EC article where they made a 4X 
Rabbit but they got the tranny from Europe and did some fairly major 
adapting.  You need a transverse mount tranny, I suppose there are 
some synchro Golfs out there but not in this country AFIK.
  If you find a tranny then a rear end should farily nearly bolt in a Rabbit 
but not a pu, where something more conventional would be easier as you 
said.
