Not sure if exhaust is a good indicator of low compression, but I can attest
that blowby is a sure sign. If the valves are ok there's only one other way
(save a blown gasket) for the compressed air to get out of the combustion
chambers, past the rings.

is your dip stick trying to escape from the engine,? Is oil blowing out of
the breather into the induction?

I had an engine that was so bad I had ti instal a one gallon jug in series
with the breather hose to collect the oil blown out, so I could stop and
pour it back in the engine.

Its sill started ok in summer, did require a blok heater to get going in winter.

If your engine makes your starter grunt alittle on each compression stroke,
and blowby is not excessive (launches the dipstick, blows oil out of the
dipstick hole, lifts the filler cap into orbit when undone) your comprssion
is probably adequate
