I should probably put my two cents worth in here and add that it's not that unusual for a bad ground to cause power to go places it's not supposed to go, (like through another bulb). I would find the main ground wire from the tail light assy and ground it with a jumper to make real sure it's getting a proper ground, and see what's happening then. Also, take a really good look at the assy to make sure there aren't corrosion problems interfering with the circuits. I agree with Gary that the wrong bulb installed (like a one element bulb intalled where a two element bulb is supposed to be) can also cause wierd problems. Good luck, Flyboy Ferg.
It is apparent that your signal wire is crossed somewhere with the brake
wire.
I would start with the bulb itself. A bi-polar bulb if not seated
correctly, could short the two together.
