[Vwdiesel] oil around injectors/smoke problem

Like Loren said- plus.....
Have you looked at your air filter box for oil? It will have some oil
normally. If it is puking with oil, your rings are likely shot. A
valve splash guard under the valve cover will help.
I get my parts from StopShopandDrive.com good parts cheap. Nozzles are
less than $10 a piece. Over $50 and shipping is free!
If it is leaking around your injectors it is most probably diesel and
your injectors need new nozzles. You can change them yourself and save
a bunch of money. Check the archives about this if you have questions.
Bentley has good instructions and ALWAYS replace your heat shields. If
you replace your own nozzles just be sure that you get ALL the old
carbon out of them before going back together or they will leak again!
Break pressure doesn't HAVE to be checked with a changing of the
nozzles- again, the archives will let you see past discussions and
arguments relating to injector nozzle replacement at home.
150K isn't that many miles on a Rabbit D. I'll bet you will be OK with
nozzles. Your valve guides might be worn out if the head has never been
overhauled.

Take a sniff of your smoke. If it smells diesel-like then it's
probably
the
original injectors and a new set of injectors will probably make a HUGE
difference.
If it smells like burned oil then either a ring broke or broke loose,
or it
has gasser oil in it and a ring or two has stuck.

I've seen this quite a bit. Sometimes it seems to be a cylinder
that's
burning oil and sometimes it's a leaking injector or heat shield.
Diesel
then mixes with the carbon, a bit of leakage bubbles through to mix
well, and it ends up looking like oil More often than not it's been a
poor
seal at the heat shield. The nozzles are real buggars to try and change
in those cases too.
Really dirty air filter could cause negative pressure in the crankcase
and cause oil to pull through and burn as could a clogged valve
cover/screen.
