[Vwdiesel] How bad can a head surface get...

Well... I'm not quite that far yet... the Jetta is still quite driveable, just smokes 
more than I like on a cold start - lowish compression. 
The '88 TD is great - started after 2 months of sitting without even a puff of 
smoke and idled smooth and quiet. Just needs a trans rebuild 
(preventative).
The '82 is back on  the road and runs great too, just needs new injectors to 
clear up smoky starts.
After many years of fixing things only when they break, I'm trying to be a little 
more proactive... :-)
