[Vwdiesel] valve adjustment

i was reading about valve adjustments for my audi 5000 diesel, and it seems
that you add spacers when doing the adjustment.  I've done several
adjustments to my mercedes, and this seems a bit different.
Are there any diy pages going over a vw/audi valve adjustment?  Where can I
buy these spacers, or have i misunderstood the chilton manual?
