I've only worked on Rabbits and Jettas but I'm thinking of doing a Vanagon
Turbo Diesel conversion. Just trying to learn what is the hot setup for
this conversion. I've been looking at some parts for sale and trying to
figure out what people are doing and why. Thanks for the info, everyone.

Anyone here know how to distinguish a Diesel Vanagon Transaxel from a Gas
Transaxel. I don't know anything about Vanagon Transaxels.
The bell-housing is the only visible difference aside from the tranny code.
The bell-housing can be swapped, so it is not totally accurate. Why do you
need to know? What is the project? The 4-speed diesel vanagon transaxles
are useless for anything other than a 1.6n/a motor in a vanagon or a sand
rail for their extremely low gearing.
