[Vwdiesel] Calling all cars

Below I have quoted some correspondence that concerns my 1.9 Turbo Jetta.

Ironically, between my posts here and that of the lengthy 'taped'
conversation between myself and VW Canada concerning the five dollar crank
bolt that cost over 2000.00 in damages at 240k, I think I have the basis for
a very strong lawsuit.

Why the fuss you may ask?

Because after replacing the head and the other parts needed to get back on
the road, that five dollar bolt has come back to haunt me.

Yes it's true.

The new five dollar bolt which was just purchased at the local VW dealership
has broken at less than 3K.

I am back to where I started. The head is seized.

THe work was done by a liscenced mechanic btw, and was done to correct
specifications.

It is my strong suspicion that there is a flaw in the manufacturing process
of said bolt.

My work in the entertainment industry has myself on a first name basis with
every publicist in the country.

I am asking everyone here in this group to speak to the subject of the
nefarious crank bolt. If anyone has documentation or anecdotal input to this
topic, please post to this group as there may be a basis for a class action.

Sincerely,

Del Vezeau

My Bentley says the bolt is a stretch bolt, and must be replaced (!) every
time it is removed, by the appropriate VW part. The instructions say it
should be clean, lightly oiled, (no threadlock) and torqued to90NM, 66ftlbs,
then turned 90 degrees further to stretch it (1/4 turn)

Conidering your mileage, you might also want to do the front crank seal
while the sprocket is off.

Glad you found a head, the price is right.

You have probably already found out that there is no key in the camshaft
sprocket, notwithstanding, there is a slot for one in he shaft.... This is
normal. the sprocket is FRICTION driven. the sprocket bolt is to be torqued
to 45NM, 33ft-lbs. Hold the sprocket with a lever of some sort (pic of
suggested tool attached) so no torque is applied to the shaft while you
tighten the bolt. The notch at the back end of the shaft where you lock it
with the timing locking plate will snap right off if wrenched against when
tightening the bolt.
Any other questions, fire away, I have the book.

Sandy
