A couple questions about the crank bolt, What grade is it, ie, an sae
grade 8, or I believe a metric class 10.9, roughly the same strength,
spend the money and get a few of them and then have them tested for
tensile strength. I forget what the tensile and shear strength of a
class 10.9 bolt, but the amount of torque applied for the application
should have not been enough to overly stress the bolt. By having them
tested, and if they come in a bag, save it because the bag should have
the lot # and batch # on the bag, both very important numbers. If they
are determined to be improperly heat treated, then you have a very good
case for a civil suit. The down side is your most likely going to have
to front the money for the testing, which, depending on the lab, won't
be cheap. I'd expect to spend up to 2K to have a lab test them and put
their reputation on the line. What ever you do, good luck.
