Go there and do a search using the words "crank and fix". You'll have a good
bit of reading.
The "fix" that volkswagen implemented I believe included a new harmonic
balancer pulley. There is also an afterrun clutch alternator pulley that makes it
easier on the crank by allowing overrun when the crank is between power
pulses.
*****The important fix, however is to have the crank nose machined to accept
the later TDI crank sprocket which does not have a key/keyway setup but rather
is a "D" shape with the flat part acting as the key/keyway. Your problems in
that regard will be over.
The rings and cylinders don't typically last 240,000 miles without being out
of spec. I wonder why VW still sells replacement rings and oversize pistons
to "fix" the damn design flaw that the cylinders wear. I suppose I should keep
my mouth shut about it. Oh crap, the guys in the white suits with the VW
logo on them are knocking on my door...
