[Vwdiesel] speratic knocking - details inside

hello all,

i own a 96 1.9TD Jetta. my engine was fairely smooth
and although the idle was just over 1K. i noticed the
"o" ring leak and got it repaired.

after it was installed i started to hear a speratic
"ping" sound from cylender 1, 3 or 4 (not sure). the
garage that installed the ip also noticed that when
the timing advance or choke is pulled nothing happens.
they told me to bring the car to the IP repair shop
because its their problem.

my conern is that they advanced the pump settings to
the max and the choke has no effect. does this make
sense?

my also runs on 100% wvo and the noise is the same -
runs/drives the exact same way.

the garage is willing to check the timing againg but
is it a timing issue or a IP issue?
