It's a good point, but the air is scavenged from the center/top of the wheel 
and pushed toward the base which is a solid plate, the rim of which would be 
pressurized.  Possibly the flow of air past the bottom plate of the compressor 
wheel might "suck" air from under it, but I don't know due to the pressure at 
that point, which force would be greater.  I'm speaking purely from my 
imagination here.  Certainly I'd agree that a blocked filter mesh would be a problem 
itself and cause a few others.  :-)
