Hi, This morning after a cold night I had problems starting my 1.6 idi
jetta. It seems like the gp's might be to blame as to the fact that I had to
cycle them 3 times and it had a long crank time before it finally started. I
just put a new filter in - one from VW with the thermo valve to preheat the
filter . Any ideas? thanks Jeff

TDI engines were not installed into the Jetta until 1998. You must have an
IDI 1.6TD. I would recommend getting an actual TD pump so you can take
advantage of the extra boost air without blowing a cloud off-boost.

After an ongoing struggle with the alternator belt on my 91 NA, I tried new
HD "Gatorback" belts for both the AC and alt.
They must be slightly bigger than stock, because with the AC belt tensioned
correctly, the idler for the alt belt goes to the end of its adjustment
without getting the belt tight enough.
Has anyone modified their Alternator brackets to accept a wider range of
commercially available belts, and if so, how?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Chris-
Likely the flange sizes are different, but really
swapping them isn't that big of a deal.
As long, as you should know by now, as the circlips
for the flanges are reinstalled correctly!!
Anyway, here is a shot of a flange tool being used
that is very simply made:
<http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1356653383034709434mcJPMI>
Really, it is just a piece of flat metal with a hole
drilled to accomodate the bolt. There is a hole to
thread the bolt into in the middle of the flange. The
flat metal is pushing on two of the CV bolts. You
might want to pick up a couple washers for the middle
bolt for some adjustability.
I seem to recall a mention that 5th gear is accessable
and replaceable with the transmission in the car, but
can't say for sure. I'm sure someone else will
comment on that.
Good luck,
David
