[Vwdiesel] VW Diesel engine running too hot

My 1.6TD oil temps run about the same, except for extreme, long climbs, where I've seen up 
to 275F over Roger's Pass last summer, fully loaded. Last week's trip over the Coqihalla, 
which presents a 17km 8% grade, saw only 250F oil temps, probably due to less weight in 
the van and cooler weather. This is measured from the oil filter flange using a 300F VDO 
sender/gauge. I now have a Volvo 240 cooler, which I plan on installing, as I am not confident 
that a larger oil-water cooler will be enough given the diesel vanagon plumbing setup, which 
either unloads heat from the oil into the head, or reduces the coolant flow to the head, take 
your pick. I did install the stock aux water pump, and it does seem to even out the oil temps 
for a while, but once they go beyond 240F on a long climb, they just seem to spiral, and take 
a long time to come back down. 

I am running a stock (actual VW) coolant t-stat at 87C. Water temp is very steady except for 
long climbs, so it seems to work as designed. I have removed and flushed rad inside and out, 
and believe it to be working well enough, even though it has nearly 500k and 18 years on it. I 
know that I have some cavitation inside my water pump housing, so coolant flow may be 
down somewhat.
