[Vwdiesel] vanagon vacuum pump versus rabbit pump

I noticed that the vacuum pump on the vanagon engine is a very heavy cast 
iron pump and has no vent to the oil pan.

Does that mean that it creates more vacuum that the rabbit pump and how and 
where does the vanagon engine vent the oil pan?
