Sounds like a grounding problem at the tail lights to me,
or maybe the headlights actually. When they're turned on,
they don't have a ground so they pull it through the tail lights...
I can't think just how to 'splain it at this moment but it's fairly
common. Check for voltages with a test light, VOM, DMM, etc
AT the tail lights before you go buying a new switch.
