The issue is the clearance by bringing the head straight up to clear the
head studs. Does the camshaft have to be removed in order to lift the head
straight up enough to clear the head studs?

Not that I would think, the stud for the timing belt tensioner pulley comes
out making it easy to remove the head without having to mess with the
shroud. The only issue might be clearance getting the head to come straight
up if you have a turbo and leave it all connected since the engine tilts
back slightly.

Has anyone that has studs installed replaced a head gasket? If so, do the
studs need to be removed to get the end of the cam shaft to clear the shroud
on the timing belt end?
