Sounds like it could be air in the fuel line. Do you have a clear section of line before the
pump? If so, watch for bubbles while increasing engine speed by hand. Could be a loose
connection somewhere between tank and pump, and/or blocked tank screen. To check the
latter, remove filler cap, then remove outlet hose from tank and check flow. Or you could
install a vacuum gauge in the line somewhere.
You may also want to check valve and pump timing - you never know when they can decide
to slip, especially the cam sprocket.
