Rolf; my 92 NA did the same thing. Trapped away from home, in a hurry and without tools, a new alternator solved it. I opened up the old one and the brushes were fine. The rest of it was toast.

so I was driving in to Boston tonight (2 hr drive) and all of a  
sudden I had glowing oil and battery lights
about 20 min before that my fuel gauge and tach had quit working
(my temp gauge quit a month ago)
I already did the behind-the-dash fix about 5 yrs ago
but clearly something new going on with these instruments

anyone know how to fix this?
the 2 red LEDs are always on now - even when key is off (battery  
getting run down)
and I don't get glow plug action (this is a diesel) on startup
both clearly unacceptable

help?
