[Vwdiesel] TDI non-start

I've been fighting the TDI the past week. I can't get it to start at
all. Even a cough is a wish unanswered. I had been having a bit of
trouble starting lately. An intermittent slow start which I had thought
was fuel filter seal related. I'd fool with it and it'd start right
up. Until the day it didn't.

It's in the driveway now and I cannot think why it won't start. I
installed a clear fuel line into the pump and there's an almost solid
stream of fuel in there. There's also fuel if I loosen a fuel line at
an injector. It cranks fine. I didn't static test the engine timing,
but it had been fine recently and I didn't hear anything go crunch (and
the belt is tight). So, here's my problem: If it has fuel, decent
compression, and is reasonably close to time, a Diesel should start yes?

I fired up the computer to link to the VAG-COM. Weird thing there is
that it will only connect to the ABS, instruments, and CAN gateway
modules. The engine, electrical, etc. modules read as not available.
"Controller Not Ready" is what I get when I try to scan the engine.
There was this one time when it did connect to the engine after sitting
for a weekend and only showed an intermittent glow plug error which is a
red herring. After I cranked the engine, it didn't scan the engine again.

What I've done so far: Replaced fuel filter seals, observed for bubbles
in fuel line, replaced 109 relay (can't hurt, might help) and checked
the anti-shudder valve.

Anyone have any ideas of where to look next? This one is getting beyond
me.

Thanks,

-Shalyn
