[Vwdiesel] More Dasher?

The compelling reason to replace the timing cover occurs when driving, a 
stone hops up from the wheelwell enters the belt area, shreds the timing 
belt, and the engine makes an expensive noise.

I've seen a few VW's running around without the timing cover over the 
years.  For the two minutes it takes to install the cover, why not use 
it?  Or did you forget to install the lower one before the pulleys went on?
