.....................5 years ago I sent a 1982 Jetta diesel to the salvage 
yard, partially for the same problem, both sides. It finally had a failed 
engine, or I'd have kept it in service. But near the end of its life I 
lifted it with a floor jack under the A frames in front and under sturdy 
rear suspension elements. Be careful of E-brake cables and various fluid 
lines. I'd consider using a wooden pad/board between the jack cup and the 
suspension element if you can find substantial purchase points. And 
carry/use an adjustable jack stand and maybe even a spare wheel under the 
frame as extra safety measures.

I'll just tell you what I do....... carry a 30 pound floor jack rated for 2 
tons, to change wheels on my 76 VW bus or my 84 Rabbit or my 85 Jetta TD. 
On the bus I use the front axle beam or the rear swing axle beams. I also 
carry a 2 inch by 8 inch wooden plank about 2 feet long, to support the 
jack on soft or uneven surfaces. And I carry a breaker bar and the correct 
sockets to take off the lug nuts if they are stuck. AND I carry a two foot 
iron pipe extension to add to the leverage of the breaker bar if necessary.

This stuff is probably better and safer than the factory wind-up toy.
