I just replaced the check valve on my 90 TD Jetta after removing the faulty water seperator. The original came apart way too easily in my hands when changing out the fuel lines. There isn't much to these valves and looking back, this thing was sitting in a position where the slipstream could get to it (road salt, sand etc.). It was pitted something fierce around the radial centerline which didn't have much overlap for the two halves to mate to begin with. Maybe air is getting in there? Beware though, the replacement VW price for that part is very dear...$72.
