Just did a little research and from the results of several sites I came up 
with these numbers from 2004:
243 million passenger cars
92-98 million trucks and SUVs (varies depending upon definition of "truck"- 
mostly number of axles etc)
6 million motorcycles and scooters, etc.

That means that the total number of cars, trucks, SUVs and motorcycles 
exceeds the population of the US.  Hayden
