Before you give up on the starter, take it a nearby auto electric rebuild shop. We have one in Grass Valley, CA & I would suspect any town of 10,000 or more would have one. I am talking about a shop with a good reputation that can rebuild a starter, generator, or alternator on sight, not one that has to "send it away". Beware of low cost chain auto parts stores that primarily sell to the general public with low cost "rebuilt" starters. Parts houses that primarily sell to professional mechanics would probably have better quality.
