[Vwdiesel] New lifter rap at high rpms, no more eco bliss

  I'm assuming it's a hydraulic lifter engine (86 -->).
When I've heard such sounds it's actually valve 
timing being off and the pistons are lightly hitting 
the valves.  Usually not hard enough to do any 
damage but still not good to have.
  Hydraulic lifters are usually noisiest cold and at 
low rpm.  Solid lifters should be uniformly noisy or 
quiet unless it's valves/pistons there again.
