[Vwdiesel] *81 Rabbit overheating*

195 or 197F is a great temp for running an 81 diesel.  

If the cooling system is working OK (radiator, etc.) you'll be just
fine.  I live near Rochester NY, where temps are seldom much higher
than 100F.  

Another advantage of 195F is that you'll get decent heater output.

Sounds like your gauge is a little off.  Normally, a 195F thermostat
is one needle width right of center.  That varies a bit.
