They didn't.  The car was never sold here and cannot be legally imported in any way.  If you have one, you built it from parts (usually a donor car, making the original a body shell with a registered serial number).  Even then, only some states allow the un-certified engine - which is a "conversion" to most.

I came within a few weeks of laying my hands on a shiny red '02 Passat Variant with 2.5TDI, AWD and 6 speed last year, but the (German officer) was too close to leaving to do the arrangements (car had to be exported or destroyed).
