[Vwdiesel] 1992 Jetta turbo diesel air filter box.

Yes, my air box is for a gas version, it takes the gas version filter. What
I find interesting is that I can find a diesel filter at the local parts
store but not the gas version. You would think it would be the other way
around.
Also on a side note, my 91 TD jetta was starting it's usual issue of when I
pushed in the clutch the engine would go way down below idle and then come
back up to idle or just a little below which we all know makes the entire
vehicle shake from the lower engine speed. This was happening all the time.
Then once I put in a new air filter, even though the old one was only in for
10k miles and looked ok the idle issue went away and it runs fine now. I
just thought it was interesting to see that an air filter can cause such an
issue. It really was getting annoying. I guess I have a good gage as to when
the air filter needs changed as well as to just change it out every 10k
miles. I don't live in a dusty dirty environment either.

I have the flapper valve that opens up to draw warm air from back around the
turbo and then cool air from the grill. Since I broke the tip of the one
vacuum line off the air box and never fixed it mine isn't working like it
should. Not that I really need it since my engine warms up so fast anyway.

I am pretty sure Nick also found his air box to be
that of a Gas Jetta, the size of the filter is that of
a gas jetta, not the standard 1.6 diesel air filter
size. So, I am guessing all later year Jetta diesel
have this air box.

Question about my air box and a pre-heat feature.
My air box has a vacuum flapper on it that I guess is
designed to stop the outside air from coming in until
a temp is reached and then the vacuum is released and
the flapper returns to allow cold air to come in.
While the flapper is actuated by vacuum, it pulls air
from a metal snorkal that is rivited onto the back of
the air box and goes back towards the exhaust manifold
and turbo to grab the fastest heat.

Does anyone have ETKA drawing on this box to show how
the flow of vacuum is supposed to work and what temp
is needed for the vacuum to be released and return the
flap to cut off the hot air and pull front grill air
from the front of the box instead?

Thanks, Bryan
PS. I know the car will run without this, as my
flapper was stuck but I have now got it working again.
