It's not really necessary, but if you have quite a few miles on the belt and
tensioner or are unsure then it would be a good idea.  Having to pull the
head and rebuild it is a lot less fun than what you're doing now!

The belt can just sit there on the car while you replace the pump. It's not
hard at all.

In the past I've had very good luck just using a socket with an allen bit in
it on the crankshaft pulley bolts. I put the car in 5th gear and put on the
emergency brake and block the
wheels. It holds the engine pretty still! I don't have an impact
wrench that will fit in there, but so far it hasn't been a problem for
me, luckily.
