[Vwdiesel] oil pan heater

I have had some experience with the dipstick oil heaters years ago in
West Texas. I buddied with a rancher that used them in his John Deere
tractors during the winter. My guess is that the dipstick heaters are
preset to a temp that does not "burn" the oil. They were of course
submerged in oil and seemed to work just fine. From my observations I
would say that they must be submerged to work properly and not "burn"
the oil. The body of oil keeps the heating element from getting so hot
that it oxidizes the oil. If you pulled them out of the sump before you
unplugged them, the oil would smoke/burn off of the rod. If you
unplugged them first- no smoke. There was no appreciable build-up of
carbon that I saw.

Oh, I guess that makes sense. The only issue I can think of would be
would it cook the oil immediately surrounding the dipstick heater? I've
heard about that concern with some other heaters. (mainly glowplug type
heaters in the oil fuel lines) The concern is that carbon will break
off the heater and find its way down the fuel system.
