  Timing mark should be a "v" with a "o" under it.  On A2 cars 
the o is pretty small and faint, on A1 cars it's pretty visible.  That 
mark falls between two blocky protrusions that are machined off 
with squared corners.  Sounds like you found the wrong mark.  
  For future reference, shut off the engine, turn it to TDC #1 and 
THEN start removing stuff (other than already having the valve cover 
off to be sure you're on TDC1 instead of TDC 4.)
  Hopefully you tightened the cam sprocket before rotating and checking 
stuff.  :-)
  What you're hitting is valves to pistons.  Of course no damage by 
hand but definitely have the cam timing off.
