Years ago, I went and looked at a W123 Diesel.  Guy said it "just quit 
running one day".  "I don't know what happened."  When all I got out of 
the starter was clicking and my very primitive (at the time) mechanical 
skills proved enough to determine that the engine wouldn't turn over 
with a wrench, I figured out that what had happened was he seized the 
engine and he was trying to find a sucker who would believe it "would 
fix right up".  I've not owned one of the recent vintage ones.  I have a 
'65 190Dc pile of parts rusting away in the garage.  (Every man desires 
a project car that he never quite gets around to fixing.)  When I got to 
borrow a 300D for a while, I found that it's not a nimble car and the 
fuel economy wasn't great, but the ride was terrific.  I just loved 
closing the doors.  Even my rusty old '65 locks like a bank vault.  No 
tinny rebound there.  If only they got 48 mpg....
