Years ago, I went and looked at a W123 Diesel. Guy said it "just quit
running one day". "I don't know what happened." When all I got out of
the starter was clicking and my very primitive (at the time) mechanical
skills proved enough to determine that the engine wouldn't turn over
with a wrench, I figured out that what had happened was he seized the
engine and he was trying to find a sucker who would believe it "would
fix right up". I've not owned one of the recent vintage ones. I have a
'65 190Dc pile of parts rusting away in the garage. (Every man desires
a project car that he never quite gets around to fixing.) When I got to
borrow a 300D for a while, I found that it's not a nimble car and the
fuel economy wasn't great, but the ride was terrific. I just loved
closing the doors. Even my rusty old '65 locks like a bank vault. No
tinny rebound there. If only they got 48 mpg....
