You are obviously in the North, probably the West and maybe in Canada?

The TDI NB isn't a bad buy, since it is just a Golf in sheep's clothing.  They tend to depreciate pretty steeply, making them a good second-hand buy.

However, for my money, I would be looking at the '97 or '98 A3 (Golf/Jetta) TDI, or a B4 Passat of the same vintage.  You get the earlier version of the TDI, but these cars don't have the re-sale strength of the A4 and B5 follow-ons, and tend to be a little simpler to work on.  Stay away from the 1.9 TD in earlier A3/B4 chasis.
