[Vwdiesel] Tiny bubbles (and big ones too!)

  Dad called me today.  He was stuck on the side of the 
road with a constantly dying Passat TDI and bubbles in 
his fuel line.  
  Long story short, when I pulled the temp/return/recycler 
thingy off the filter there was a sucking sound that would've 
impressed Ross Perot!  We ended up towing it home and I first 
bypassed that plastic PIA.  Looked better but not good enough. 
Bypassed the filter and the bubbles went away.
  Tomorrow we'll put in a new filter and plastic thingy.  Doesn't 
really make sense since if, for instance the drain was leaking air 
in then there shouldn't have been a vacuum in the filter.  It 
appears one of the connections or the filter itself was leaking.  
If anything odd shows up tomorrow I'll post it. 
  Might help with that other TDI that was having bubble trouble.
