In the early '60s Volkswagen went looking for the oldest VW in the
States, the owner to be given bug #500,000 off the production line.
To keep someone from dashing over to Germany and buying an old VW,
they had a stipulation that the owner would have to have owned it for
a while--I think the period was 6 months. The winning car was a '46.
It had changed hands in the previous 6 months, but it had clearly
been in the States for a long time. Technically, the then-current
owner hadn't had it for 6 months, but the previous owner no longer
owned it, so he wasn't eligible either. VW flipped a coin and awarded
the two guys bugs #500,000 and #500,001. The guy who got #500,001
said he wasn't complaining--I wouldn't be either!
