Same here. My parents bought a 79 rabbit diesel new and ran it until they
moved to florida in 85 then they gave it to me with 125k on the odometer. I
ran it up to 130k until #2 connecting rod went out the front side of the
block. Later found out by tearing it down that the connecting rod nut backed
off. 
I put an 82 diesel engine back in it so this would have voided me for the
award. It later had head problems and being a young single Airman in the Air
Force I dumped it for a brand new Chevy Baretta.  
If only new then what I know now I would have kept it and still been
enjoying the life of 50+ miles per gallon I use to get with it. Only one
problem was no AC and here in N.C. you kind of need it.
