Since it's the same engine but in two different bodies, perhaps
this one is more true, better aligned, better tires, lot's more
variables. Just because a "coincidence" happens it doesn't
prove cause and effect, which you already know I'm sure. :-)
I remember being told of the original Quattro tests being done to
determine how much mileage the 4x system cost the car's original
mpg. Same car, disconnected the axles, blocked the output shaft
and so on. It made 2 or so mpg LESS as a 2 w car! They put it
all back, got the mpg back. Took it off again and lost it again.
After some checking, the Continental tires they were using were
most efficient when "wound up" or on a driving axle. They changed
tires and got the same mpg both ways. (I can't verify this story
any more than it was told to me by an Audi tech that was told the
story by one of the hands on engineers at a training seminar/school.
I'd guess tires and alignment more than fuel. Heck, maybe it's
global warming! ;-)
