[Vwdiesel] brake problem

Several weeks ago, I posed a question to the list about a new rattling
sound I was hearing in my '84 Rabbit. As it turns out, the sound was
the pads rattling because my brakes didn't have anti-rattle clips.
So I ordered the anti-rattle clips and installed them last night. I
installed them so that they look like the clips in this picture:

The only bolts I had to remove to do this job were the lug nuts on the
wheel, and the two 7mm allen bolts that hold the caliper to the rest
of the brakes. Sure enough, this fixed my rattle problem. But now I've
got a new problem. On the drive into work this morning I discovered that
when applying the brakes, I get a grinding/whirring noise from the front
left wheel (the same set of brakes I was working on last night).
Now I'm almost positive that I put the pads on the same way they were
when I started (and I'll confirm this tonight). Assuming that isn't
the problem, I'm trying to figure out what else could be wrong.
1. The two 7mm allen bolts holding the brake caliper fit inside of
a rubber bushing. Inside each of those bushings was a plastic sleeve.
It seems that the only purpose of the plastic sleeve was to guide the
bolts back in. In my case, the plastic sleeves were cracked and
getting in the way, so I simply took them out. I inserted the bolts
through the rubber bushing and then tightened them down. Is there any
chance that those plastic sleeves were serving some larger purpose?
2. These brakes have about 14 thousands miles on them -- all without
anti-rattle clips. Is it possible that the new anti-rattle clips are
now causing the pads to press against a different part of the rotor
(when the brakes are applied) than they previously touched -- causing
this grinding/scratching sound?
Any advice?
Thanks,
Bryan
